Enhancing Our Cafeteria Experience: New Updates and Positive Goals

Dear Families,
At MK, we believe the cafeteria should be more than just a place to eat—it should be a space where students can relax, connect, and enjoy their midday break.
Recently, we’ve been working hard to make our cafeteria more inviting. You may have heard from your child about the music playing in the background or the table games like Uno and cards that are now available. These small changes have already started to create a warmer, more social atmosphere that we are very excited about.
To build on this success and ensure the environment remains safe and respectful for everyone, we are introducing a new Positive Reinforcement System for cafeteria expectations. This system is designed to give students more ownership over their lunch experience—specifically regarding seating.
How the System Works:
Our focus is on consistency and celebration. Each week, we will focus on one clear goal (e.g., "keeping our floor clean" or "using inside voices").
  • Earning Paws: Students earn a "Paw" for every day they meet that week’s specific goal.
  • The Reward: If a student earns 4 out of 5 Paws in a week, they earn Free Seating for the entire following week!
  • A Fresh Start: If a student doesn't meet the goal, they will be in assigned seating for the week but will have a completely fresh opportunity to earn Paws again starting the very next Monday.
  • Positive Only: Paws are never taken away, and we do not use "strikes."
Support and Reflection
If a student finds it difficult to meet expectations, we view it as a learning opportunity. Staff will complete an infraction sheet for counseling follow-up, and the student will complete a brief reflection sheet. This helps them think through their choices so they can get back to earning their Free Seating as soon as possible.
Our goal is to help every student feel successful and enjoy the fun atmosphere we are building together. We appreciate your partnership and encourage you to ask your child what this week’s "Paw Goal" is!
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

STUDENT ILLNESS REMINDER

Dear Families,

As we move through the school year, we kindly remind everyone of our health and safety guidelines regarding student illness and injuries. Please review the following return-to-school policies:

  •  Illness Guidelines: Fever: Students may return when their temperature is below 100.0°F for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication (e.g., Tylenol, ibuprofen).
  • Vomiting: Students may return 24 hours after vomiting has stopped, as long as they are able to tolerate a regular diet.
  • Diarrhea: Students may return 24 hours after the last loose bowel movement, provided they are eating normally.
